Description
Color
photograph
of
Horsetooth
Reservoir
, a
part
of the
Colorado-Big
Thompson
project
in
Fort
Collins
, was
drained
in
1977
due
to
siphon
damage
from the
Big
Thompson
flood
. The
reservoir
is
the
main
source
of
Fort
Collins
water
supply
. This
photograph
was
taken
of the
Eugene
Lamb
Homestead
and
Quarry
which
were
covered
over
by
Horsetooth
Lake
.
Lamb
,
who
had
come
to
Colorado
as a
prospector
,
worked
in the
Stout
quarries
and
operated
a
red
sandstone
quarry
in
Soldier
Canyon
,
where
he
took
up
a
homestead
. His
stone
was
used
in the
old
Fort
Collins
Public
Library
,
now
the
Fort
Collins
Museum
. There was a
stone
house
,
garage
, and
office
and a
rock
wall
around
the
homestead
. This
is
the
quarry
behind
the
house
. "The
origin
of the
name
,
Soldier
Canyon
,
may
be
due
to the
fact
that a
skeleton
was
found
in a
crevice
with
two
or
three
U.S
.
Army
buttons
before
the
time
of
Camp
Collins
.
It
may
have
come
from the
fact
that
soldiers
gathered
wood
from a
nearby
hill
for the
camp
, and
used
the
canyon
as
access
to the
foothills.
