Canyon
flood
on
July
31
,
1976
occurred
when
a
thunderstorm
stalled
over
the
canyon
dropping
twelve
inches
of
rain
during
a
four
hour
period
. The
river
rose
nineteen
feet
forcing
a
torrent
of
water
down
the
canyon
and onto the
eastern
plain
.
145
people
were
killed
,
418
homes
and
52
businesses
were
destroyed
and an
additional
138
homes
were
damaged
.
